The idea that the best photography equipment is necessary to achieve great looking images is one of those schools of thought that consumer marketing has delivered – with a nice red bow on top. Now I’m not saying that having great equipment isn’t a huge part of a good workflow, but I do question the photographer vs. the photography equipment conundrum. This is just one example. This image was shot with a Canon point and shoot. I had an issue with my traditional camera during an impromptu shoot and without thinking that the world was going to end, grabbed the closest camera and made it happen. I think the results were quite good. The light was bounced from a white piece of cardboard, and there were no additional lights – truly a MacGyver moment. So, use what you have when capturing great images. It’s not the “stuff” that makes your image work, it’s you eye that ultimately works the magic.
